<blockquote>5th Cavalry Regiment was formed in January, {{has date::1863}}, by consolidating the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions which had served along the {{has state|Georgia}} coast. The men were from the counties of {{has county|Effingham}}, {{has county|Screven}}, {{has county|Liberty}}, {{has county|Bulloch}}, {{has county|Lamar}}, and {{has county|McIntosh}}. It was sent to {{has state|Mississippi}} and placed in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps. Serving under {{has person |name=W.W. Allen}} and {{has person |name=R.H. Anderson}}, the unit participated in the {{has city|Atlanta}} Campaign, the defense of {{has city|Savannah}}, and the campaign of the Carolinas. On April 26, 1865, it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Colonels {{has person |name=Robert H.
