Bill joined the army in 30 Oct 1942 for the duration of the ware plus six months<ref>{{Citation:William O James in WWII Army Enlistment Records - Fold3.pdf/Citation Listing}}</ref>.  According to William he served in the Pacific during the war.  During his service, he was dropped onto the wrong island and was bit on the hand by a snake, an injury which limited the use of his hand his entire life.  The intended island which wasn't supposed to have venomous snakes and so he was lucky that anyone had the antivenom available to save his life.
