Discussion

Confederate Army Service

I have not been able to locate any primary sources confirming John's service in the Confederate Army. The source of these claims seems to be Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, Vol VI, which doesn't list any sources.

John's updated headstone asserts John was a private in Company C 32nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry. This headstone is not original, and was added several years after his death. It is currently unknown where this memorial comes from, or how they verified John's service.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System lists a John Warren a private in Company C 32nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry, but contains no personally identifiable information. Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System states the unit comprised of "men from Savannah and the counties of [[|Washington]], [[|Burke]], [[|Effingham]], and [[|Screven]] counties"[3], and we know that John's first child Mary3 Ann Warren was born Burke County in 1842. In 1860 John was enumerated in Emanuel County which is between Washington County and Savannah [4].

While not conclusive, it seem John may have lived in the correct general area at the time, and could have enlisted in that unit at that time.
