Marriage Discussion

Given the marriage records found Wayne County Marriage Book 1809 1869 marriage record[3] appear to be in chronological order, and the position of the Nancy and Simon's marriage record in these records support a marriage in 1855. [4]

The Georgia Marriages, 1699-1944 index from ancestry asserts a marriage between Simon Smith and Nancy Hickox on 1 Sep 1855 in Wayne County[5]. This record is an index only and does not containing any other personally identifying information we can match against our Nancy in question. However we can calculate that our Nancy Hickox would have been about 20 years old at the time of this marriage, which seems reasonable for the time. According to the 1850 census [6]David Hickox's and family did reside in ware county. The 1860 census asserts David Hickox's family lived in Pierce Count[7]. Pierce County was created December 18, 1857, from Appling and Ware counties [8], as a result, I believe the Hickox family did not move and the marriage index is consistant with what we know of Nancy.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978 asserts a marriage between Ebenezer Harris and Nancy Hickox on 1 Sep 1853 in Wayne County, Georgia[9]. As with the previous record, this index only and does not containing any other personally identifying information we can match against our Nancy in question. Nancy would have been 18 at the time of this marriage, a plausible marrying age. The location of the index is problematic. The index asserts Nancy and Ebenezer were married in Wayne County in 1853, however, Wayne county appears to not to have been formed until 1857.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978 [10] appears to contain the acutal image mentioned in the The Georgia Marriages, 1699-1944 index of Nancy Hickox Ebenezer Harris. It appears that the ancestry database has a transcription error, and the marriage record is actually for Simon Smith and Nancy Hickox. Ebenezer Harris being the individual who obtained the marriage certificate. The record itself coincides with The Georgia Marriages, 1699-1944, an is probably the primary source record.

Census Records

The 1860 census asserts a Nancy and Simon, aged 53 and 23 respectively, were living together as husband and wife in Centrevillage District, Charlton, Georgia with three children Martha, Aaron, and Matthew aged 5, 2, 3 respectively[11]. This suggests Nancy was born circa 1837.

The 1870 census asserts a Nancy Smith, age 35, was living in the household of David Hickox two children Owen, age 7, and Jane, age 5. This suggests Nancy was born ca 1835 [12].

Comparing the 1860 and 1870 census raises several concerns. First, their is a two year age difference between the two Nancy's. While possible one or both of the informants provided incorrect information to the census taker, to me this suggests they may not have been the same individual. Second, what happened to the husband and children between the censuses? We would expect the oldest child, Matthew, on the 1860 census to have been 15 wich is probably still to young to have been out on her own. Why are both Matthew and Aaron unaccounted for? It is, however, constant that Nancy may have moved in with her fathers family if her husband died between 1860 and 1870.

I believe 1870 census is probably the daughter of [[{{{Page_Name}}}]] (Tree Profile) and Sarah Altman. However, due to the numerous inconsistencies with previously know information we cannot say with any certanty the Nancy and Simon Smith on the 1860 census are our subjects of interest.

I was unable to locate any record of Nancy Smith or Simon Smith in [Cemeteries and More] [13]
