In spite of the distributing of the lands in the area, it was not fully settled at first.
It was not until a Treaty with the United States and the Cherokee Nation on December
29, 1835 held at New Echota in Georgia, that the Cherokee finally agreed to leave
their lands and move west beyond the Mississippi River. Soon after Georgians came in in
large numbers and not an Indian was left within her boundaries.
Some time in the future the State Dept. of Archives and History in Atlanta hopes
to publish the 1832 Gold Lottery, but in the meantime, please do not ask the Surveyor
General Department to search for names in these records, since they do not have a general index. If one knows the county in which a person was living at the time of
holding the Lottery, a search will be made by the Surveyor General Dept. in that
county for one specific person.
