Held for Jury on
 +
Operation Charge
 +
 +
  Mrs. Estelle Irwin, 43-year-old
 +
housewife, of 78 Prospect Av., Ba-
 +
yonne, who, police say, admitted
 +
the allegation made by the mother
 +
of five children tfiat the defendant
 +
performed a criminal operation
 +
upon her, was held without bail
 +
pending action by • the grand
 +
jury following arraignment in Bayonne
 +
Police Court yesterday.
 +
  Immediately after the testimony
 +
of Detective Sergt. Thomas War-
 +
nock, one of the arresting officers,
 +
was heard, Recorder James L.
 +
Sweeney bound Mrs. Irwin over for
 +
grand jury action in $2,500 bail on
 +
the charge of criminal abortion.
 +
While friends of the woman were
 +
trying to raise bail, word came
 +
from Hoboken that the plaintiff
 +
suddenly took a turn for the worse
 +
at St. Mary's Hospital, where she
 +
is confined. It was then decided to
 +
let the Hudson County Prosecutor's
 +
Office fix the amount of bail.
 +
Mrs. Irwin was placed under ar-
 +
rest late Tuesday afternoon by
 +
Warnock and Acting Detective
 +
Frank McGeehan following in-
 +
formation forwarded by the Hobo-
 +
ken police who said Mrs. Johanna
 +
Lindsey, 40, of 68 Washington St.,
 +
was severely ill and that she had
 +
named a woman known to her only
 +
as "Estelle" as having performed
 +
an operation upon her. She said
 +
a girl friend had brought her to
 +
"Estelle's" home in Bayonne. After
 +
several hours of search, the detec-
 +
tives took Mrs. Estelle Irwin in
 +
custody and, after much grilling,
 +
succeeded in obtaining an admis-
 +
sion that the Hoboken woman had
 +
visited her, although she at first
 +
made vehement denial of the ac-cusation,
 +
they say.
