According to family histories, David and his brother traveled to Georgia from Connecticut to purchase lumber to sell back in Connecticut. During his visit David became quite ill with a fever, while his brother returned to Connecticut with the lumber. David stayed with a local family while he was nursed back to health.^{[[#Family History|[note 3]]]}
