Not much is known about David's life prior to coming to Georgia.  According to family histories, David and his brother traveled to Georgia from Connecticut to purchase lumber to sell back in Connecticut. During his visit David became quite ill with a fever, while his brother returned to Connecticut with the lumber. David stayed with a local family while he was nursed back to health.<ref group="note" name="david hickox family history">I am not personally familiar with this family history, but the story does fit into the overall time line of his life. Their are facts that differ from primary sources, and the overall narrative cannot be independently verified.</ref>
